Roadtrip 2023 Spring: Seaside - Waldport - Bend - Rock Creek Schoolhouse - Richland

Day 1 - Vancouver to Seaside

And so it starts. Truck and Ella wait across the street as we commence the ritual of coffee and snacks at the coffee shop once known as "Tony's".

Just for Nick: That Stearman used to be very shiny.

Never good news when they close the HOV.

Seattle appears to be on the same build like crazy trajectory.

Russland has a decided lean today.

Yikes a big multi car crash on the northbound side of the highway. Note that our direction was not impacted - but there was a 20 minute holdup anyways with everyone slowing to have a look. Hope all folks will be OK.

It's spattering hail as we make the turn off I-5 and head east to the coast.

The rain is relentless - and the rivers run high.

Today, we mourn the loss of our friend and legendary restauranteur, John Newman. We met John shortly after he opened his flagship “Newman’s at 988” in Cannon Beach about a million years ago. On our first visit, he abandoned his post in the kitchen to come out and meet the lunatics who ordered “one of everything on the left side of the menu and a salad”. Since then, we’ve darkened Newman’s door on every visit to Cannon Beach – usually more than once a year. The left-side of the menu tradition continued. John always came out from the back to see us, and so we have had many laughs together. John trained an entire generation of chefs and staff during his time, and we have always enjoyed seeing his alumni succeed in their further endeavours on the Coast. We last saw John just before the Pandemic in the fall of 2019 – it was late, and John and Sandy (his wife and business partner) were interviewing a new wine distributor. We got invited to join them for way too many tastings, and we had many more laughs. Cannon Beach will never be the same, or feel whole again.

The Real Island where Blackbeard's treasure is buried. It is impossible to make a clear photograph of this island. No-one knows why.

The Cannery Pier Hotel in all its glory. Unfortunately for us, they are now priced out of our market.

Day One, and the Black Helicopters are already on the lookout for us.
